your dining room table is an art piece

Enjoy Dessert Plate in Green- RossLab

So, Monday, hello. I was able to be part of hosting a shower this weekend so I have been away from my laptop and my blog but I have been contemplating table decor as I helped arrange a few.

Linen Napkins- Organic- madderroot

I don’t think all great table decor should be limited to birthday parties, showers and special occasions. I find that if you rotate your dinner table decor in and out four or five times a year, I usually change it when I get bored with it, which is usually every few months, it can be a great change of scenery in your home and is pretty inexpensive.

Natural Linen Dinner Napkins- Bloomsong

Give yourself an emotional boost by changing the dialog your room is giving off by adding different colors and textures. I like to get bright place mats and mix them with bamboo toppers. A layered affect really changes your table dynamic from something utilitarian to your own art gallery.

Rustic Floral Arrangement- Sugar Pop Party

Take it a step further and mix in different flowers or centerpieces every few weeks and I guarantee you will be pleasantly surprised when you get up to tackle a Monday morning and have something fresh to greet you. I try to cut roses from my garden every week during spring and summer, I know this sounds like a lot of effort for your dining room but it really can add some sweet comfort to a place that is often overlooked.

inspired by the night..

Oversized Black Pattern Armchair- Metrosofa

We can sometimes steer clear of dark furniture and decor in fear of giving off the wrong impression in our home as dark and Gothic, weird and eerie. However, used subtlety dark color schemes can have a dramatic and elegant feel. This chair above by metrosofa can be a stand-alone piece in a room filled with only touches of dark, but that is mostly white or light in color.

Stagecoach Transportation Upcycled Book Art -Vintage Book Prints

I adore the print above as an art piece that draws just touches of a darker edge into a room. The stagecoach is vintage and almost even ghostly but it would give the perfect story-line placed somewhere unexpected like a toilet room.

Lacy bird bowl in deep teal- PrinceDesignUK

Likewise, this soap dish is elegant and deep. Not something you might find everyday in a toilet room or by a kitchen sink which makes it standout and give your room more depth.

Midtown Manhattan - antonyz

Finally, I have to add a dark smokey New York Street scene. What is the dark side of night without an iconic New York image such as this? Scenes like this play out in our favorite movies and maybe as decor in a unique restaurant but have you ever thought of bringing this kind of edge into your home? I think this kind of work is somewhat taboo for home decor but I couldn’t disagree more; it should truly be embraced in small bits and pieces to add passion to your home.

a statement piece, every room needs one

A Life Worth Living- Sharon Cummings

A statement piece is the object that all design in a room or quite possibly an entire thought of architecture can be derived and developed from. These paintings by Sharon Cummings are truly beautiful pieces of work and I can see a brilliant room inspired from each of them. Her work is bold, and passionate yet modern, tasteful and not over-powering.

Abstract Landscape- Sharon Cummings

If you are having trouble giving your room life you can do what I do and find one item you love. Like a painting or beautiful piece of art, something you see and you think about after if you don’t purchase it or if you do purchase it on the spot, you are extremely excited to show everyone. This is a statement piece. It doesn’t have to be dramatic to everyone in the room, it has to be dramatic to you. It’s your home.

So, if you love it, plan a room around it. Pull paint colors from your newly acquired palate and find decor that compliments the piece in both color and feel. If you need direction, you first need to find an inspiration. Trust your gut and only purchase something you know is right for you. Do you have a statement piece that drives one of or all of your room decor?

Tiger Eye Bowl- amy+mayd

Well, this past week has been fun and hectic! I have new work up on all of my amy+mayd sites and I am thrilled that my treasury list was chosen for Etsy’s home page last Friday night!! For those of you who didn’t get to see it here is an image and here is the link: “Sometimes I wish I lived in an Airstream” which was based off of a Miranda Lambert song that I absolutely love.

country rustic simple white decor

White Ruffled Linen Tablecloth- ruffledlinens

I will always love the simple country vibe. That is where I grew up and I will always love anything rustic, anything country and anything ranch style. It all gives me the clear mind and sun-soaked feel I need now and then.

Antique White Vinyl French Louis Armchair- metrosofa

There is just something about beautiful white linens and aged white-washed furniture that gives me peace. The great thing is these pieces make a striking statement, they go with any color scheme and can easily be integrated into your home.

creating an entry way….

Butter Baby- Found Design Miami

My current home does not have a dedicated entryway space so I am ready to create one off to the direct right of my front door in our office. So to create an entry way out of the entry might seem a bit backwards but just because the architecture of my house doesn’t allow for a traditional entryway doesn’t mean that I can’t have one!

1950's Retro Vintage Painted Abstract Art Chair- Vintage Renewal

To create an entryway of sorts I am going to use a refurbished dresser as a statement piece and bonus, the drawers are a  one stop storage shop for keys, magazines, mail, shoes, umbrellas and bags. Similar to this awesome “butter” colored piece (shown above) by Found Design Miami, I have chosen a dresser that is low and fits well with the room that I am preparing as my delayed entry way. A chair near your door is always a nice idea for comfortably taking off your shoes when you come in the door.

Reclaimed Lumber Shelves- Indian Summer Gardens

These shelves, made of salvaged wood are truly a standout piece and a great entryway organizer. Bringing in industrial or other unconventional textures can be a great way to give your room or entryway dimension and display of photographs is an instant uplift as you walk in the door.

a modern romance…

Dark Princess- Sparsh Glass

Your bedroom can be the scene for a modern romance all year-long if you incorporate some nice rich colors and memorable art. Personally, I love a purple, grey and black color scheme. It is unisex enough for a man and a woman, yet not too feminine. Purple adds just the romantic charm needed to soften the black and grey.

"Night Walk" - S.S.C. Photography and Digital Art

The San Francisco street scene photo above is just the type of art to set the stage for a comfy romantic bedroom. With art like this your space can transcend from a boring old room to a room with real personality that you don’t outgrow quickly. I also like to add a few personal photographs and some nice linens that match the color scheme.

Turkish Cotton Bath Towel- Turkish Towel

This Turkish towel is handwoven and a beautiful addition to a bedroom/bathroom master suite.

Dreaming Of Spring- Raine Style Home

I like a color scheme that matches but I like to pull items into a room that have different use of the colors, different shades and patterns. This cameo is cool and unexpected and incorporates purples and a striking black.

a little retro is never bad..

green pillow retro-HenriettaAndMorty

Bringing a little retro into your life can brighten your home and make you feel cheerful. Not all of these items are truly retro, they are actually new but incorporate retro feelings, icons, patterns and colors. This pillow is a perfect segue into spring and summer (can you tell I am tired of the cold already?), bringing a joyful demeanor into your home. Particularly, if you are really into neutrals, one bright piece can really change the entire look of your room without going overboard and leaving you stuck in the 70′s.

Airstream Trailer Brown Sepia-Red Tile Studio

I also absolutely love this little airstream art piece. It would be fun in a living space where it would be unexpected and maybe cause a dream of a cheerful escape to pop into your head now and again. Modern interpretations of classics like the airstream help take the best of the past and repurpose it into an updated version.

Upcycled Green and Pink Rug-KiddyQualia

This rug is also a gorgeous use of greens that are often associated with retro design palates. For some absolutely awesome retro finds I encourage you to check out this list:   “Sometimes I wish I lived in an Airstream” based on Miranda Lambert’s “Airstream Song”

I have found vintage record players, radios, lamps, a phone and much more! I’d love to hear what your favorite retro piece on the list is!
